I remember as a child sitting on the mountain watching the cool skiers speed down the slope. I always wanted to ski in my youth but the desire got smaller and smaller as I aged. My appeal suddenly returned a few years ago and it’s much easier than I imagined. I want to share with you why you should consider taking up skiing as your next hobby. It doesn’t matter how old you are because, like me, you can still learn.
1# It Doesn’t Take Long to Learn:
Believe it or not, picking up the basics doesn’t take long at all and you could be gliding down the slope sooner than you think. This is because skiing mimics the normal body movement of walking. It may take you a few attempts to feel comfortable, but skiing quickly becomes natural. Within a few days, you could be living your childhood dream. But, remember that it takes a lot more practice to be comfortable on the larger slopes.
2# Skiing is Safe:
The horror stories of someone falling off and snapping their legs isn’t such a reality as people make it out to be. A lot of us older folks think that if we injure ourselves, it takes longer to recover. We may fear that skiing becomes a liability with all of our other responsibilities in life. This isn’t entirely true. I’ve been skiing for two years and have yet to see any kind of accident. Sure, people do fall and get minor injuries. Most of the time it’s because they get overconfident and crash into a tree.
3# Skiing is Affordable:
I always thought that skiing was an expensive sport. If you compare it to the likes of basketball, then it is. You need to buy equipment, transport costs, and hire an instructor to start off with. However, it’s not much more of an expensive hobby compared to other popular activities such as golf. You can get high-quality equipment at freeride ski shop for less than it would for a full set of golf clubs.
4# An Excuse for A Holiday:
This is another major advantage for us as we get older. It can be hard to find the time to take a holiday. Luckily, a skiing holiday is different. It gives you the chance to take the family away to a beautiful mountain-side resort. My kids and I like to ski whilst the wife relaxes and recuperates in the spa. And, the best part is that you can only go skiing during the winter. This means you can still go on your summer holiday to the beach later in the year.
5# You Start to Get Fitter:
Learning to ski is no easy accomplishment. You need to be fit and active. This may encourage you to visit the gym and keep in shape more often when it isn’t the skiing season.
The Takeaway Message:
Skiing is a great sport to take up at any age of your life. Don’t let the fact that you’re getting older stop you from enjoying it. I hope I’ve reignited those childhood dreams and shown you that it’s still possible to learn to ski.
